Free Energy, “Bang Pop” (2010)
find it on Stuck On Nothing
Listen, Fine Tune Friday never claimed to be first on the scene. There’s plenty of other bloggers out there giving you the very first taste of something, but Fridays here are devoted to one thing and one thing only: the new song that most often got caught in my head this week, period.
On to it…any discussion of Free Energy has to start with the usual keywords/touch points: 70′s radio rock, guitar pop, James Murphy-produced. All good things, and all perfectly descriptive. But it also feels right today because it’s a gorgeous day here in DC, and putting on this song as you walk down down the sunny street among the newly-freed springtime clothes or as you drive off with the windows down for some Easter weekend debauchery, you can just let all the dumb fun, hand claps and ohhs of the backing vocals wash over you for an excellent “life is fun” feeling.
Variety is not exactly the name of Free Energy’s game, to the point where I had a tough time trying to decide whether I wanted “Dream City” or “Bang Pop” to be the song of the week. But the point being that if you like this song, you could either get the album and be perfectly happy or just listen to this song ten times in a row and be perfectly happy. Either way, you’re happy. And so am I.
