Phosphorescent, “I Don’t Care If There’s Cursing” (2010)
find it on Here’s To Taking It Easy
If Naive Harmonies had the equivalent of Pitchfork’s “Best New Music”, Phosphorescent’s new album Here’s To Taking It Easy would get that tag easily. It’s a loose country-ish record that’s punctuated with spots of absolute gorgeousness. It’s not unlike Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s Lie Down In The Light, which is probably why I like it so much.
“I Don’t Care If There’s Cursing” has a breezy, two-chord verse that turns into an irresistible chorus with an impossibly satisfying couplet: “I don’t care if it’s tomorrow, I don’t care if it’s at all, I don’t care if it’s forbidden, I don’t care if it’s the law”. And I don’t know who’s playing piano on this track, but it’s genius: seeing out the song with a some rollicking beauty. Best new music.
