What’s a Fine Tune Friday to do?

“Georgia”‘s been a favorite of this year for a while now, but it’s getting the Fine Tune Friday treatment today for two reasons, neither of which have anything to do with the royal wedding.

Reason number one: here in Our Nation’s Capital (disclaimer: is ours, but may not be yours), we’re finally getting the kind of lovely spring weather that gives spring such a good reputation, instead of the piss-in-your-face spring weather that everyone forgets about until it’s pissing in our faces, and this is a quality track for lovely weather.

Reason number two: my friend and fellow writer Christian is still of the mind that Yuck’s name is an accurate description of their music, and I figured that, as a massive Teenage Fanclub and Pavement fan, he should get another nudge to check them out, to accept their ridiculous 90s-ness (especially ridiculous since the band members are so young they can barely remember the 90s) and revel in it. And to hear how much this song sounds like a jewel of an outtake from Simpatico.

Warning…broad generalizations for convenience of argument forthcoming:

I think I have the same problem with this band that I do with pretty much all the new school indie rock I’ve heard in recent years (The Pains, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Japandroids, Surfer Blood are the first few that come to mind, but I know there’s more). It’s not that any of it is bad. Much of it is pleasant enough. This song, for example, is nice (though I think you nail it with “outtake”…as in not good enough to make the Simpatico cut! Zing!). But none of it ever really pushes that needle for me…the one that goes from heard it online to must purchase. It just kinda goes in the ear and out, without any real care of ever hearing it again. Maybe I’m unfairly meeting it with arms crossed and skepticism intact. Can’t really help it though.

I think in some sense because I love and still listen to so many bands from the 90′s, I almost grade these new schoolers on a harsher curve. Like I have enough of this kinda stuff to keep me plenty busy already and am not really looking for any new entrants. (Incidentally, I’m letting HypeMachine serve up whatever Yuck they’ve got to me right now. Go figure my favorite so far is the least noisy one yet. It’s called “Daughter”.) I’d much rather put on “Perfect From Now On” or “Siamese Dream” for the eleventy billionth time than purchase a Yuck record.

Ultimately, if you’re not interested in a certain kind of music, you’re not interested in it, and it’s nothing that needs to be defended. But I don’t see any difference between this stuff and Band of Bees or Sharon Jones (or anything on Daptone for that matter) is that we grew up on this sound when it was new.

I’m sure there’s a 60 year old somewhere who wonders why anyone would listen to the Budos Band when they could just listen to the JBs. Fair enough point, but both are fun to listen to. Why not listen to both?

I don’t really hear any Smashing Pumpkins in there. Yuck is a lot more loose and fun than the Pumpkins.

I guess it just boils down to: at the end of the day, you either like something or you don’t. I shouldn’t have bothered with all the silly, pointless rationalization! Where’s the delete button on this thing!
